What Jared is Doing Right Now to Improve Education in California

Jared meets regularly with a wide range of education leaders; he has personally visited almost 100 schools during his six years in the Assembly. The California Superintendents Association named him its 2011 "Legislator of the Year."

He is endorsed by California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, by the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) and the California School Employees Association, as well as by dozens of education leaders throughout the 2nd Congressional District.

A few highlights of Jared's legislative career:

  • He has authored or co-authored numerous Assembly bills to increase education funding and provide greater flexibility for local schools.
  • He fought to restore education funding lost to Governor Schwarzenegger’s draconian budgets in 2008 and 2009.
  • He fought successfully to restore home-to-school transportation in rural areas.
  • He actively supports Governor Brown's critical revenue initiative to increase funding for all levels of education.
  • He is co-authoring legislation to close a billion-dollar corporate tax loophole and use the savings to create a new middle-class scholarship to allow every middle- class family in California the opportunity to send their children to the UC or CSU system.

Education is more than just a campaign issue for Jared.

As the product of public schools, a father of two young children, and the husband of a teacher, Jared cares deeply about education. Jared believes that every American should have the opportunity to receive a quality public education; he also feels that greater investments are needed across the spectrum from pre-K to college. Jared will continue to push for the development of a highly skilled workforce for a clean-energy economy, which is essential to our global economic competitiveness.

Jared supports immigration policies that help to keep our brightest international students working in the United States after getting their degrees. Similarly, Jared regards the DREAM Act as a common-sense investment in keeping our country safer and strengthening our economy by offering legal status to bright young undocumented immigrants who are willing to serve in our military or pursue higher education.

In Congress, Jared will work tirelessly to reform the flawed "No Child Left Behind" act by making it less punitive and more flexible, and by providing federal funding to support federal mandates. A related priority for Jared is securing adequate funding for the IDEA special-education mandate, which must have increased federal funding due to its substantial impact on school budgets.
