Today, Assemblymember Jared Huffman announced the endorsement of the Yurok Tribe and the Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria in his bid for the open seat in the 2nd Congressional District. The Yurok Tribe is the largest in California with over 5000 enrolled members. The Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe located near the city of Trinidad in Northern California.

“We’ve had the pleasure of working with Assemblymember Huffman at the state level on issues that are very important to the Tribe,” said Yurok Chairman Thomas O’Rourke.  “We look forward to continuing our relationship with him at the Federal level.”

Huffman is the front-runner in the 2nd Congressional District race and has secured key endorsements from a broad base of North Coast leaders, including elected tribal members.

“We are confident that Jared’s leadership within the 2nd Congressional District will give North Coast communities, including Native American tribes, the representation needed to bring exciting changes and economic, social, and environmental advances to our region,” said Garth Sundberg, Chairman of the Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the TrinidadRancheria.

“We are very pleased with Huffman’s record when it comes to natural resource and water issues,” said Troy Fletcher, Executive Director of the Yurok Tribe.  “His strong leadership on issues like river restoration and saving our local state parks from closure is what will make him a great Congressman for our rural district.”

These tribes join many other North Coast community leaders in supporting Jared Huffman for Congress, the list includes: Congressman Mike Thompson, North Coast Assemblymember Wes Chesbro, Humboldt County Supervisor Jimmy Smith, Humboldt County Supervisor Ryan Sundberg, Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos, Humboldt County Sheriff Michael Downey, Arcata Councilmember Mark Wheetley, Eureka Councilmember Linda Atkins, Former North Coast Assemblymember Patty Berg and Former Humboldt County Supervisor Bonnie Neely.
