Dear Friends,

It's been a busy first three months in Congress!  In the Budget Committee and on the floor of the House, I've fought hard against draconian cuts in the Ryan Budget that would shred our social safety net, repeal historic healthcare reforms, and put our economic recovery at risk....

FORT BRAGG, CA –
Assemblymember Jared Huffman, the Democratic Nominee for the 2nd Congressional District, followed a well settled tradition on Saturday by working “Pit Number 2” at the annual “World’s Largest Salmon BBQ” to benefit the Salmon Restoration Association of California at Noyo Harbor in Fort Bragg. Huffman oiled the grill, stoked the coals and flipped salmon filets alongside Congressman Mike Thompson, who has been working the same pit at the annual BBQ for over twenty years.

Currently representing Southern Sonoma and Marin Counties in the Assembly, Huffman recently won the primary election for the new 2nd District Congressional race with 38% of the vote.  He faces a runoff against Republican Dan Roberts in November.

Hundreds of residents visited with Huffman, Congressman Mike Thompson, and other local elected officials over the course of the day.  Proceeds from this annual fundraiser are used for Coho habitat restoration in Northern California.  This year’s event was dedicated to former Fort Bragg Councilmember Jere Melo, a longstanding organizer and champion of the Salmon BBQ who died in August of last year.

“I’m honored to participate in my first BBQ to support salmon restoration work on the North Coast, and I look forward to many more” said Huffman.   “It’s a special privilege to be part of an event dedicated to Jere Melo, who was such a vital part of this community for many years.”

Besides the Salmon BBQ, Huffman used this trip as an opportunity to experience the Mendocino Coast with his family, enjoying a ride on the steam-powered Skunk Train among other local activities.

“I continue to be awed by the beauty of the Mendocino coast and rural amenities such as the many gorgeous state parks,” said Huffman.  “It strengthens my resolve to help protect these treasures, including keeping all of our state parks open.”
